5 New Beauty Supplements That Will Help You Look and Feel Better

It's 2017—and while kombucha, bone broth, and medicinal mushroom tonics are currently as common as a morning latte, there's one throwback wellness staple that's making a cool comeback. A new wave of nutritional beauty supplements is taking the market by storm, targeting skin health, hair sheen, and even eye strength. And although they may rely on science-backed ingredients and high-quality extracts, they look nothing like their clinical predecessors. Instead, they arrive in sleek glossy packs that are more likely to be stocked at a discerning beauty boutique—where you can shop them alongside your favorite lipsticks or lash-volumizing mascaras—than the local health food store.

"Everyone wants to look better faster," says New York City nutritionist Robin Barrie Kaiden, M.S., R.D. of the desire to pop a single pill that can fast-track results. And while she cautions that "there is no quick fix"—supplements should be part of a 360 degree approach to a healthy diet and lifestyle, and taken under the supervision of a doctor—there are research-tested ingredients that may contribute to the big picture. Here, five of our favorite supplement blends for the months ahead.

THE AGE-DEFYING SKIN FIX
German molecular scientist and celebrity dermatologist Barbara Sturm's Skin Food is designed specifically to combat the visible signs of skin aging, thanks to one hero ingredient. Purslane, a superfood compound developed in collaboration with doctors at the University of Miami, helps fight inflammation while activating the body's own "youth enzymes." Additional ingredients like glucosamine (which boosts hyaluronic acid production), Japanese Knotweed Root Extract (which is packed with anti-aging Resveratrol), and high-quality antioxidants round out the complex, which promotes the skin's ability to maintain its best elasticity, texture and tone.

THE STRESS-BUSTING BLEND
Gwyneth Paltrow's buzzy line of Goop vitamins, formulated in conjunction with Clean Program founder Dr. Alejandro Junger, have cheeky names. But the ingredients in the wellness brand's "Why Am I So Effing Tired?" formula are no joke. The mix aims to combat adrenal fatigue, increase energy levels, and diminish stress with a combination of Vitamin B, Omega 3's (derived from anchovy, sardine, and mackerel) a Viviscal nd ancient Ayurvedic herbs like bacopa, amla, and holy basil.

THE SCREEN-VISION SAVER
Surfing Net-A-Porter, scheduling catch-up time with friends, and ordering dinner in a matter of minutes from your Smartphone makes for efficient multi-tasking, but it may also contribute to screen-strained vision. With the average person spending up to ten hours a day in front of a screen, opthamologists have seen a surge of complaints ranging from blurred vision to light sensitivity. In an effort to combat the damaging free radicals that lead to macular degeneration, Occugard's Blutein Protection supplement combines antioxidants like lutein, which helps to filter high-energy blue light, and vitamin A to boost allover eye health. Kaiden also suggests clients turn off electronics an hour before bedtime to let the eyes rest from a day of technological stress.

THE GOOD HAIR DAY GUARANTEE
The hair growth supplement Viviscal is as common backstage as lash-plumping mascara these days, thanks to legions of supermodel testimonials. Now, celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, whose clients include Bella Hadid and Kim Kardashian West, is launching a Hollywood-bound supplement for dry, brittle, or thinning hair. Ouai's Dry Hair pack promotes shine, hydration, and prevents breakage with a mix of vitamin E, amino acids, and biotin. Arriving in a compact silver foil sheet, they're sure to fit into even the tiniest of It-Girl clutches.

THE NEW SLEEPING PILL
While there are a few dietary modifications that may help you get a good night's rest, Perricone MD's Sleep Booster aims to distill sleep maximizing vitamins into a single pill. "Magnesium and melatonin can promote relaxation," explains Kaiden of the supplement's key ingredients. Also in each little ampoule: Extracts of ashwagandha, an adaptogen that has shown promise in helping the body cope with anxiety.

Bridal Chain Alfred Angelo's Bankruptcy Just Turned Into A Disaster

When bridal gown chain Alfred Angelo closed all of its stores suddenly last month, brides across the country began freaking out. For weeks, customers have had no idea if they would get the gowns and bridesmaid dresses they'd already paid for, or if refunds were even possible. On Thursday, the company finally posted an update to its website with bad news: If you haven't already received your dress, it's not happening.

"The Chapter 7 Trustee greatly regrets the upset that Alfred Angelo’s July 14th bankruptcy filing has caused its customers," reads the statement on AlfredAngelo.com. "While we have been successful in obtaining customer records and delivering many dresses and accessories for customers all over the country, even after the bankruptcy filing date, it has now become apparent that the logistical and financial strain of fulfilling each and every open order makes continuing that course of action no longer possible. Thus, to the extent any order has not been fully delivered to a customer, it shall have to remain unfilled."

Employees at Alfred Angelo's 60-plus stores didn't know about the bankruptcy until a conference call on Thursday, July 13, so they had been selling gowns — or the promise of gowns — up until that moment. That day, the Palm Beach Post reported that the employees of the company's headquarters in Delray Beach, FL had left their office building carrying boxes and personal belongings. Many store workers, facing imminent unemployment and unsure about their last paychecks, reportedly worked late into the night on Thursday, trying to get what dresses they could to the brides who had bought them. On Friday, July 14, Patricia Redmond, an attorney for Alfred Angelo, told Michigan's WZZM that they were filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy and working on the details of liquidating assets. She didn't make any promises, but her email appeared on the "closed" signs on many of the stores.

This statement, however, makes it seems as if they have delivered all the dresses they ever will. It advises customers who believe the company still owes them money to fill out a proof of claim form to submit to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The link they include for doing so was not working at the time this story was published.

The silver lining in all this: Women are back on Twitter and Facebook, offering up their used gowns to brides affected by this mess.

Reformation Relaunches A Permanent Petites Line

Sound the online shopping alarm: Reformation has officially revived its beloved "Don't Call Me Cute" Petites Collection — and this time, it's here to stay.

The O.G. offering first launched as a limited one-off capsule back in early 2015; the second, now permanent, iteration scales down the labels famous L.A. Cool Girl aesthetic into a crop of shortie styles, offering sustainably-produced formal attire and farmers' market wear in equal measure. The selection features everything from wedding dresses to denim, with plenty of the open-back sundresses and jumpsuits we've come to expect from Reformation. And, true to its name, each piece is designed to make smaller framed ladies look good — not just cute.

The collection's sizing is traditionally petite, designed for women 5'4 and under with dress and pant sizes ranging from o to 12. Reformation's clothes are typically fit on models between 5'6 and 5'10 — by finally creating pants with 23" inseams, shorter women nab some cropped flares that are actually cropped.

In a press release, Reformation heralded the permanent addition of a petites line as one step in a larger size expansion. "Our customer base is growing (no pun intended) and we don’t want to let anyone down. Because none of our girls should miss out. So in our quest to make sure women of all shapes can wear Ref (and look damn good doing it) we decided to bring back the petites collection."

A future full of flirty dresses and midi skirts available in all sizes is looking bright. The Petites Collection is available now online, which you can get a preview of ahead.
